Kottayam Kunjachan


This is inarguably one of the greatest entertainment movies of all time. Mammootty has shown the class and skill which proves why he is considered one of the best actors of all time. Koottayam Kunjachan is a small time thug who is just out of jail. He is made to leave the Kottayam district by the local theologian and go to a place where his 'wild acts' are not heard. But he soon gets into trouble with a group of workers which makes him instantaneously famous. He gets to stay with a local devout played by Innocent who lives with his wife, played by K.P.S.C Lalitha, and two children, one of them played by Ranjini. He is tricked into doing things by Ranjini under the false pretension that she loves him. What happens next when he finds that she was using him is the base of the story. The story has very gripping subplots which thickens the main plots. The connection between parts of the film are very nicely handled which makes it a fast paced movie. The attraction of the movie is Mammootty who plays Kottayam Kunjachan. He has taken a kottayam accent and has delivered his dialogs with great panache. Mammootty's presentation of humor is just great in this movie. For a Malayalam movie lover this is a must watch.

Kilukkam


This was one of the very few movies that me and my dad watched together in a theater. Dad’s idea of going to movies was to wait till everyone else had seen a movie and listen to their comments,
before wasting (in his words) his hard-earned cash on the whole theatre-going experience.

I must count my lucky stars coz enough people had convinced Dad to have a look at this movie. So off we went to the Safire theatre (now a rotting eyesore on the prime Mount Road real estate). After inhaling the smell of popcorn that other Dad’s were buying for their kids (Dad are you listening :p), we popped into the theatre.

What I saw in the theatre is still my benchmark for top-class comedy.

The story is as old as the hills - a loser (Mohanlal) who lives off his photographer friend (Jagathy) making a living as a guide for the tourists at Ooty. He dreams of making it big one day and is always on the look out for a quick buck.

When a seemingly well-to-do outsider (Revathy) comes to Ooty, he thinks his life is made. He takes her around and starts bragging to his friends about how wealthy he is going to be because of her.

All his dreams come crashing down, when he realises that she is mentally challenged.
He tries desperately to get rid of her, but she always finds her way back. She ferrets out their hidden cache of food - "Vecha kozhi da manam" ( I can smell cooked chicken, she says) and generally makes their life a misery.

Then suddenly they realise that her relatives are searching for her. But not for the right reasons. To keep her safe, they get her to work at the home of a cantankerous retired judge (Thilakan in a marvellous role).

Who is this girl? Is she really retarded? Why does she bond so very well with the judge.

Why do I like this movie? As I said earlier, the comedy here is top class. Whether it is Mohanlal and Jagathy doing their usual Laurel and Hardy routine, or the master-servant banter between Thilakan and his man Friday Innocent or ofcourse Revathy’s antics in her mental phase.

Some of the scenes in this movie are ever green classics. You will see them almost on a daily basis in any of the comedy serials. Sample a few here..

1) Revathy breaks stuff in the hotel and tells Mohanlal that her uncle - the Prime Minister of Angamali will pay for the damages. Watch for Mohanlal’s expression - priceless. Angamali is a small town in Kerala.
2) Mohanlal trying to get rid of Revathy by taking her to the Suicide point and promising her that God will turn the whole hillside to chocolate icecream. Ofcourse she still finds her way back.
3) Revathy smelling out their hidden chicken fry and eating the whole of it.
4) Revathy convincing Innocent that he has won the mega-lottery. Innocent bad mouths his boss (Thilakan) and leaves the job. He has to slink back later when he realises that he has not won the lottery after all.

Oru vadakan veeragaadha


Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha or Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha (Translation: A Ballad of the North) (1989) is a Malayalam feature film directed by T. Hariharan. The screenplay of this film was written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair.

The film is based on a legend about the famous warriors of Northern Kerala. According to the legend, Aromal Chekavar, a well-known warrior, lost his life in a duel when his sword broke off at the hilt during the fight. The metal rivets holding the blade to the hilt had been replaced with wooden ones by his trusted ally and cousin, Chandu. Chandu is said to have betrayed his cousin because he was jealous of Aaromal's popularity and abilities.



Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha represents the Golden Age of Malayalam Cinema. The story was filmed numerous times in the early black-and-white era. Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha presents an alternative version of the same legend, as it presents the incident from Chandu's perspective, suggesting that grave injustice has been done to Chandu by wrongly accusing him of replacing the rivets. Though the language of the black and white era was generally heavily melodramatic, in Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, the director and writer used a more natural tone. M.T. Vasudevan Nair won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. Mammootty received a National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Chandu. Generally, his portrayal of Chandu is counted among the best portrayal of any character in Indian Cinema. P. Krishna Moorthy, the Art Director, also earned the National Film Award for Best Art Direction.





PLOT

The film consists of flashbacks showing the incidents leading to the death of Aaromal Chekavar. It opens with two young men, Aaromal's son and his nephew (the son of his sister Unniyarcha). They learn how Chandu’s treachery resulted in Aaromal’s death. The young men set out to take revenge on Chandu. The youngsters challenge Chandu to a duel, which he refuses because they are young and inexperienced in duelling.

Chandu narrates his version of the incidents to the servant girl of the house. He tells how he became an orphan and how his uncle Kannappan adopted him. Kannappan's son and Chandu's cousin Aaromal used to humiliate Chandu. However, Chandu excelled at Kalarippayattu (a martial art of Kerala state in India) which made Aaromal jealous. To make things worse, Aaromal's father loved Chandu like his own son and was proud of his martial skill. This increases Aaromal’s dislike of Chandu. Chandu is hurt and saddened when Aaromal decides to marry off his sister, Unniyarcha to a well-to-do man even though he knows that Chandu loves Unniyarcha dearly. Chandu feels that he will never get the respect he deserves for his skill in Kalarippayattu as long as he remained in the shadow of the famous warrior dynasty of his uncle. Chandu decides to join the martial arts school run by Aringodar, another renowned master of Kalarippayattu martial art, so that he can make a name for himself. Before long, Chandu becomes Aringodar’s chief student.

A dispute arises between two brothers of a royal family in Kerala, which is to be settled by a duel between the champions of the brothers. One of the brothers hires Aringodar as his champion, and the other hires Aaromal. Aringodar wants Chandu to be his second in the duel, but Chandu is forced by family obligations (owed to his uncle) to be Aaromal’s second.

During the duel, the blade of Aaromal’s sword breaks. Even with a broken sword, he kills Aringodar by unlawful means, contrary to the conventions of duelling. As Aaromal rests in a room after the duel, he accuses Chandu of bribing the swordsmith to use wooden plugs instead of steel rivets to fix the blade of the sword to the hilt, causing it to break during the duel. This causes a fight to break out between Chandu and Aaromal. Aaromal accidentally trips and falls on a spike during the fight with Chandu, but utters ‘Chandu Chathichu’ ('Chandu betrayed me') to people who rush into Aaromal's room hearing the commotion. Chandu flees from the place and later discovers that the swordsmith was bribed by Aringodar’s daughter, Kunji.

The film returns to the present time where the two young men (Aaromal’s son and nephew) are adamant about fighting Chandu. Chandu defeats each of them in turn, and asks them to return. They refuse, and subsequently Chandu stabs himself saying "let the traitor Chandu’s story end here. I don’t want you people to lose..."

Meesa Madhavan

'Meesha Madhavan' is a through and through entertainer released after a dearth of meaningful films in the Malayalam film Industry. It has the humour, the songs, picturisation and the performances and a whole light feel about it to make it click.
The story revolves around Madhavan (Dileep) a petty thief liked by all and sundry in a small village in Kerala. Though a thief, Madhavan nicknamed Meesha, has ethics and it is well known that if he ever churned his moustache at somebody he is sure to be robbed that night.
Madhavan was forced into the trade through circumstances caused by the callous money lender Bhageerathan Pillai ( Jagathy Sreekumar) who holds the title deed of his property pledged by Madhavan's father. Madhavan is after Bhageerathan Pillai's life and time and again the encounters between them are hilarious. Rugmini (Kavya Madhavan), Pillai's daughter and Madhavans childhood friend returns home after her studies in the city. She joins her father's plans to trap Madhavan by hook or crook. Meanwhile a new Sub Inspector Eapen Pappachen (Indrajeet) arrives in the village. He has a confrontation with Madhavan.. Pillai along with Eapen spins a web for Madhavan. Their plans go too far to the extend of jeopardizing Madhavan's sisters wedding.. Rugmini feels sorry and she realises Madhavans real worth and falls for him. Eapen who is a real crook himself steals the idol from the local temple and accuses Madhavan of doing it. With Madhavans past history it is easy for him to convince the villagers. Madhavan has the whole village on his trail.. How he proves his innocence and gets out of the mess is to be seen....



Dileep with this movie has proved his mettle as a versatile actor... he could go far. Jagathy as usual is his hilarious self. Kavya Madhavan has matured as an actress.. but she has take care of her looks especially her weight. The character artistes .. oduvil Unnikrishnan as the police constable, Sukumari as Madhavan's mother, Harishree Ashokan as Madhvan's pal and Jyothirmayi who has a soft corner for Madhavan, have all done their parts well.
Lal Jose has succeeded in putting together the right ingredients to make a successful film.. the comedy may go well with the audience. Although the ethics of making a hero out of a thief which may have an influence among the youth is questionable...Girish Puthenchery and Vidyasagar has put together beautiful super hit music and Cinematography by S. Kumar in the Palghat, Pollachi areas deserves applause
On the whole the film is a good entertainer worth watching.
